An elegant young couple, Deelaila and Zambri, returned from overseas together with their family members, just for the ceremony.

The absolute care that went into the preparations, settings, deco, and arrangements… and the ensuing exquisite results…. was simply perfect.

Besides the warm and gracious guests that made the event meaningful, the little details of each hantaran (nuptual gifts that are exchanged between the bride and groom’s families) really amazed me…. Look at the cake! It is absolutely gorgeous and looks too beautiful to eat!

The quaint yet bustling little town, with many architectural relics of its vibrant past, provides a fantastic backdrop for outdoor photography.

This melting pot between Asia and Europe as it used to be known due to its strategic location, is one of the most unique places in Malaysia, and you’d not find many other places with such a diversity of cultures.

Resh and Ganesh, whom incidentally, are both doctors, are a pretty adventurous couple willing to experience new things and unusual locations, and the happy result is, a very unique and special series of photos. I had a lot of fun shooting your pre-wedding and I trust that both of you enjoyed it too!

Sweet, fun, romantic, and magical… with clear blue skies, beautiful sandy beaches, breathtaking sunsets, lush green paddy fields, amazing natural lighting, a real holiday ‘feel’…. and most important of all…. a sporting young couple who are so obviously in love.

Julian and Juliana were a little shy initially but once they ‘warmed up’, they were really sporting and natural in front of the camera!

And even though it was initially raining that day, miraculously, when it was time for the shoot, the rain just stopped, the sky cleared and the sun came out. Special thanks to all those back home who have been praying for us on this photoshoot. It really does make a difference, don’t you think?!

So I was really excited when shortly after our return from Langkawi, we received an enquiry from a lovely young couple from Australia, Brett and Wirda, for their wedding at BonTon Langkawi this year. It was indeed a dream come true for me!

Anyway, just to share something different from what I usually photograph…. this is a uniquely themed birthday party that I covered recently. Small and cosy with around 100 guests, everyone all dressed up to the nines Hollywood movie-star style, classy black and gold theme colours in a sophisticatedly decorated ballroom, all the 80’s hit songs resounding from the high-density speakers… everything gelled together perfectly for this glamourous Hollywood theme party.

What’s even more special is that the birthday girl, Keeley, is one of the former brides whose wedding I photographed sometime ago! I often hear from former couples, especially for new assignments… and it’s always a pleasure when I do. It’s one of the highest compliments a photographer can receive.

Often, garden weddings are synonymous with exotic faraway destinations but this lucky couple found a hidden jewel of a venue, right here in Malaysia, close by the Federal Administrative Centre of Putrajaya. The resort is just a short 20-minute-drive from the Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

This is one of the most beautiful garden wedding set-ups I’ve seen within the grounds of a city hotel itself.

First of all, I’d like to wish all of you a Happy and “Paws”-perous Year of the Tiger!

Besides all the pre-wedding outdoor portraiture and wedding photography, I’ve also been working on some personal and family portraiture with the Hasselblad Digital System recently. I remember a famous fashion and commercial photographer mentioning this phrase, “When you shoot with the Hasselblad, you will never go back to DSLR again.”

Most people will not have a clue what that means, and not only until you open up the RAW file to see the details with your own eyes, will you truly understand! You will be absolutely blown away!

Now here’s a pic from a pre-natal photography session to share. Happy viewing!

It was a classy and exclusive affair with a beautiful garden wedding fronting the Pantai Beach, followed by an exquisite and intimate wedding banquet at the ‘Table Coup de Coeur’ Le Rembulan Restaurant, nestled in luxurious gardens facing the pristine white sandy beach. And the grand finale was an exhilarating dance party at The Beach Bar, an outdoor bar facing the South China Sea and backed by a luxurious tropical forest.

The entire wedding ceremony was in French, and the officiating minister, Rev. Fr Peter Bretaudeau from the St Joseph Church in Sentul Kuala Lumpur, is the only priest in Malaysia who is able to conduct a wedding entirely in French!

Michele and Stephane, who are from South Belgium, have both been living in Malaysia for many years, and it was really interesting to see that there are similarities in wedding customs and traditions all over the world. Similar to the local tradition of bridal door games, the best man had to give the bride’s brother an ‘ang pow’ minus the red packet, in order for the latter to release his sister over to the groom’s side!
And during the wedding banquet, there was also a table-to-table hearty ‘Yum Seng’ session or toast to the couple’s health, happiness, and posterity, synonymous with the typical Malaysian Chinese wedding dinners!

Vince and Nikita who hail from Sydney, Australia, are really a fun, adventurous and unconventional couple, and a joy to photograph!

Their wedding ceremony was simply beautiful… a cosy and intimate affair of family and close friends… ‘cocktail-style’ with standing room amongst the beautiful wedding settings on the white sandy beach. In fact, most of the guests were barefoot including the bridal party to blend with the beach wedding theme! All that, plus the clear blue skies and refreshing sea breeze, made this beachfront wedding just perfect!

I remember asking the bride, “What made you choose Centara Grand Krabi as your destination wedding location? And she answered me without any hesitation, “The rock! The one in front of the beach. Where else can you get such a spectacular view for a beach wedding?”

She was referring to the spectacular limestone karst formations which loom up from the sea in front of the beautiful resort. The Centara Grand is nestled in an alcove of limestone karst formations, facing pristine white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters.

And this time, the sunset decided to join this cosy intimate party of family and friends, and turned the sky into a glorious shade of deep blue, because not only was it a beachfront wedding, but a beachfront wedding dinner banquet too!

In fact, when I saw the table settings for their wedding banquet ingeniously and intentionally matched with the glorious sunset hues, I was in awe and in my heart, I was thinking, this is the most beautiful sunset that I’ve ever seen!

If you are willing to take the risk, you will be rewarded with something great, just like what this lovely couple told me, “If we had wanted an indoor or a garden wedding, we could just pick any hotel or venue in Sydney that could do the job… but we wanted something more special and unique.”

So kudos to the adventurous couple for coming all the way to Krabi, Thailand with their family and friends for a very special destination wedding!

What do you get when a sweet petite Chinese girl from Malaysia meets a tall dashing Punjabi guy from New Delhi?

An explosive potpourri of colours, sights, and sounds, when they get married in an elaborate Punjabi wedding ceremony and luncheon, followed by a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and wedding dinner, right here in Malaysia.

Susan & Ankush were university mates in the United Kingdom, and coincidentally, both Susan’s and Ankush’s parents said the same thing to them, “Find someone to get married to there before you come back…” and guess what, both of them ended up coming back with each other. Isn’t that such a romantic love story? So, how befitting it is then that the song they’ve selected for their wedding slideshow is ‘Endless Love’. 

Susan and Ankush, congratulations once again. Both of you make a really lovely couple!

Chiang Mai is famous for its handcrafted umbrellas and fans.

You’ve not seen Chiang Mai if you’ve not been to the renowned Wat Prathat Doi Suthep.

It was a really hot day at the elephant sanctuary…. but the lovely couple nevertheless had fun during their elephant ride.

Not only is Thailand one of my favorite destinations for my work as a destination wedding photographer, but it’s also a wonderful place for a holiday! The country’s great variety of culture, exotic food ie spicy tom yum (!), and warm hospitality, are the reasons that I keep returning to this amazing country.

Last week, we had the chance to spend some time in Chiang Mai with Sher Li and Murphy for their pre-wedding photoshoot. For starters, here is one of the couple’s favourite pics to whet your appetites. This was taken at the famous Wat Prathat Doi Suthep.

Anyway, here’s one of my recent pre-wedding photography sessions to share with you all. Not only is Frasers Hill a well-loved holiday location in Malaysia, but it is also an increasingly popular destination for pre-wedding photography.

Whilst there to photograph Keeli and Avinash’s pre-wedding on a week day, we bumped into two other groups of photographers on various shoots!

The cool refreshing climate up there is a welcome change for wedding couples all decked out in their resplendent attire… gives new meaning to the happy term ‘no sweat’!

Despite a slight drizzle, the weather was lovely… cool, fresh air, and just the right amount of sunshine… We spent some time shooting at the park, a few colonial bungalows, and the golf resort… plus some Bollywood style shots as well. The sporting couple were attired in the customary white wedding gown, traditional Indian garments ie sari and kurta, and evening wear.

Well, it’s now the 10th anniversary of this challenging international event, which has been held yearly in Langkawi, Malaysia, for a decade. Also known as ‘the toughest show on earth’ with 17 hours of non-stop action, the Ironman triathlon this time round had over 600 participants from 41 countries participating in the 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride, and 42km run, from 7.30 am in the morning til 12.45 am at night, with the winner completing the race in just slightly over 8 hours! And the best part of all, most of the participants were ‘return customers’ who support this event year after year.

What really inspired me most was that each participant who took part in the race, did so not just because there’s a monetary prize involved (in total USD50,000), but did so with the determination to complete the Ironman Malaysia Race. You are all champions, my friends!

Coincidentally, I received Jason & Nadia’s enquiry while I was photographing another couple, Kelly & Clay’s wedding at the very same location, around two months ago, and here I am, back again!

And I feel so honoured that not only were we Jason & Nadia’s wedding photographers, but they wanted us to be part of their guests as well. A huge hearty thank you to both of you and we appreciate it so much.

Anyway, I’ve wanted to shoot an authentic Indian wedding for such a long time, as I’ve always enjoyed seeing such vibrant colours, feeling the pulsating beat of the drums, hearing the resounding blare of the trumpets, and most importantly, feeling the energy and warmth of the close-knit family relations within the Indian community.

2009 has been a really good year for me so far, and I’m truly blessed and thankful as the list of things that I’ve desired to do seem to be coming true one after the other.

And on top of that, the real challenge lies in building that instant rapport with the couple that you are photographing so that all the emotions and expressions of love and joy can be captured and treasured for a lifetime.

In David & Aida’s case, they preferred to have their lifestyle portraiture session at their home - ‘the place where you feel most comfortable’!

Free from any external distractions and feeling relaxed because of the familiar environment, all this lovely couple needed was just a wee bit of guidance from me, because when they were in front of the camera, they were already on the perfect wavelength with me!

This is one portraiture session where I totally forgot about time while clicking away on the shutter!

What more appropriate venue than at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa at Penang!

With the recommendation of the resort’s Event Manager, Betty Lim, (email: betty.lim@shangri-la.com), I returned to this luxurious resort recently to document the really unique wedding of Mahshid and Chad. The simple yet elegant and romantic wedding, was an East meets West marriage with 30 guests from all over the world, inclusive of children.

During this season, the weather in Penang is supposed to be steaming hot but it unexpectedly started drizzling around 5.00 pm. To some, this might have been cause for panic already but the lovely bride, Mahshid was really cool about it. She just calmly said to everyone, “Let’s have some champagne”, and everyone was having a good time at the lounge. Fifteen minutes later, the rain stopped and the ceremony went on perfectly. That is the fun part of a garden wedding!

The song that I selected for the slideshow is an instrumental version of Ave Maria. This meaningful song was also sung to the lovely couple by the sister of the Groom during the ceremony.

Alvin and Chin Lee’s wedding might just be one that fits such a pleasant picture! And what’s more, the hing dai are willing to play the bridal games all the way just to please the ji mui. To have such sporting friends like this is a blessing that one should not take for granted.

Since the groom’s house was near Jonker Street, in Melaka, I urged the lovely couple not to miss this opportunity for some artistic portraiture there.

Each quaint building, be it home or shop, and its inhabitants have their own unique history to tell and they are all artists in they own trade.

Ok, enough of my ramblings…. don’t want to start sounding like a long-winded uncle… LOL

I always do whatever it takes to make a wedding couple understand that I’m not pointing an AK47 to make you freeze in your steps, but just a tiny, sweet l’l gadget that can capture all those special moments so that you will remember them for a lifetime.

Sometimes, the personality of a bride and groom does play a major part in getting beautiful relaxed portraits like this, but generally to most couples who are not used to being in front of the camera, all you need to do is just relax and be yourself… just imagine as if you are looking at a small kid asking for Christmas candy from you, and you will get the best out of the very short time you spend with this stranger that you may not have met til your wedding day itself!

October and November have been really busy months for me with many wedding and pre-wedding photoshoots… mountains of photos to process… numerous slideshows to produce… and albums to send for design and printing.

How nice to have wedding couples who treat their wedding photographers as friends. And a sweet thoughtful act like this simply makes my day!

Experiences like this are such a treat and I will always cherish this small yet meaningful act of appreciation.

And just to let everyone know I’m off to Centara Grand Beach Resort in Krabi, Thailand for a destination wedding shoot middle of next week. The couple is from Aussieland too… I promise all of you that I will bring back plenty of nice pictures to share with my blog readers here.

And here is what the card says…

Lao Cai means ‘Old Street’ in Chinese. We started our journey by the night train from Hanoi at 9.00pm and arrived at Lao Cai Town, at 8.00am in the morning. Thereafter, we took a bus to Sa Pa where we checked into the hotel and then proceeded straightaway to start our 12-km trek through the mountainous countryside to the Lao Cai Village. When I completed the entire trail, I couldn’t believe that I had actually embarked on it without any actual prior outdoor training in trekking! Fortunately, I survived!

At the Lao Cai Village, most of the civilians are from the Black H’mong tribe, and they deal mainly in agriculture.

You may be wondering why they are all decked out in their traditional costumes like this. Are they just trying to impress the tourists? If you think so, then you are totally wrong. This is what they actually wear every day, even when they work in the fields.

When we checked into the hotel prior to our hike, I saw a group of young Black H’mong schoolgirls dressed in their traditional costumes surfing away on the computers in a cybercafe! And one of the teenage Black H’mong tour guides was speaking in perfect English with an American accent to a bunch of European tourists… I was actually thinking, I wish our University graduates could speak such good English!

How about those elderly Black H’mong women? I was even more shocked… not only can they bargain, but they can argue with you on the price tag for each item in their basket in perfect English! So you see, don’t judge a book by it’s cover.

For the kids who play by the river with the buffalo they are tending, to me, they have the innocence and freedom of the ‘Children of Heaven’. However, they are fast-catching up in this internet age and soon, we may not see this innocent face anymore in the near future.

A Black H’mong family

Here we go again… buy from me, purleeese…

I nearly got charged at by this buffalo… because I didn’t realize that I was wearing a red T-shirt with Uncle Ho’s portrait on it… hahaha!!!

The kitchen in the home of a H’mong Tribe family. But the living hall was equipped with DVD Player and Satellite TV, ok?!

The road is actually intersected by a waterfall which flows down the mountain…. so all vehicles have to pass through the waterfall! Isn’t it amazing?!

Isn’t it nice that you don’t need to type out hundreds of names on a guest list? Or have a long-lost uncle or aunt whom you’ve never ever met before come up to you to shake your hand and you’re trying to remember who they are? And the worst thing is that they only show up at 9.00 pm for your wedding dinner and insist on having karaoke into the wee hours of the morning after that!
